WEIGH THE PREPAID CELL PHONE OPTION. Check whether you can save with a
prepaid service plan. They typically cost $20 to $60 and have no contract
obligation. You can pay as little as 10 cents a minute for calls, about the
same as with a 300 to 400 minute a month contract plan. You will pay for
minutes you use but must periodically add money or minutes to your account
to keep your cellular service active. If you are a big talker
a 500 minutes a month plan from a major carrier might be cheaper.
Be careful with prepaid service from major cellular carriers; with
some, their minutes can expire, and per day fees are expensive.

Cell-Phone carriers often promote two year contracts. Those might
suit your needs if you want a new phone at minimal cost every few years
and and are satisfied with your service. Otherwise consider these tips
for service without a contract or reduced commitment:
LET YOUR CONTRACT LAPSE. If you've met your one or two year contract
obligation the contract becomes month to month with no early
termination fee. If you think you might want to switch to another
carrier soon, it's worth staying month to month for a short time.
Be aware that you monthly cellular service charges include an amount
to recoup the cost of any "free" or low cost cell phone you received
when you signed the cellular contract. If a cell carrier paid a
manufacturer for a cell phone that it gave to you free with a two
year contract, part of your monthly bill will repay the carrier
for the cost of the cell phone. However, your monthly fee won't drop
after your contract expires and the phone is paid off. If you plan to
stay with your cellular carrier you might as well sign a new contract
and get a discounted phone.
PAY FULL PRICE FOR THE PHONE. Cellular carriers don't advertise this,
but by paying full price for the cell phone you can get a monthly
service plan and avoid a contract term or termination fee, though
some cellular carriers have you pay in advance, Sprint offers one
low minute plan wth this arrangement. AT&T and T-Mobile will do this
at their walk in stores but not if you get new service online.
